The General Services Administration (GSA) is calling on industry partners to weigh in on a proposed shift that could transform how commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) products are listed and managed in the federal marketplace.
Through a newly released Request for Information (RFI), the GSA is considering requiring Global Trade Item Numbers (GTINs) for all COTS products listed in the FAS Catalog Platform (FCP). GTINs are widely used in the private sector for product identification and could offer significant benefits such as enhanced product visibility, reduced duplication, and greater automation.
This is part of GSA’s effort to modernize catalog management and strengthen data accuracy across government contracts. However, the agency understands that such a change may affect suppliers in different ways—especially those who sell customizable products or do not currently use GTINs for individual items.
GSA is asking for feedback from suppliers, manufacturers, and industry stakeholders to better understand the potential impacts.
